Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has to be one of the craziest days of the year. Half the world gets depressed that they’re spending another February 14th alone watching the Emmerdale omnibus or playing Scrabble with Grandma, and the other half is weighed down by the pressure of making it perfect for their other half!

What many people don’t know is that God loves them so much more than anyone else ever could. John 3:16 tells us that He loved each and every one of us so much that He sacrificed His only Son so that we could have eternal life – how great’s that?! When I consider how uncomprehendibly massive the universe is, it’s so amazing that God loves me and cares for me so much: little me from little Audenshaw; a tiny speck on little planet Earth, a fantastically small bit of His creation. Incredible.

We haven’t done anything to earn God’s love either (‘not by works’ but by God’s grace –Ephesians 2:8-9) so there’s nothing we can do that will make Him stop loving us. 1 John 4:18 tells us that ‘perfect love casts out fear’ (the whole of this passage in 1 John 4:7-21 is well worth a read by the way!), and as God’s love really is perfect, we can rest assured that it will never end or let us down.

I’m not against Valentine’s Day – far from it: I think it’s great to show the people you love that you appreciate them, and if I was blessed with a girlfriend I’m sure I’d be panicking about what to cook her for dinner right about now! However, it’s important to have a sense of perspective to avoid getting caught up in the hype and losing sight of what really matters; not only realising that God really does love you – more than you could ever imagine! – but loving and appreciating your partner, your family and your friends every day of the year 🙂

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
